Three times a week you can catch a fast boat to Chiang Saen in Thailand. It leaves at 8.00am and the journey takes approx. 9hrs, if the water level is low then it can take longer. There are 52 seats on the boat, access to the outside deck is also possible.
A meal is provided during the trip.
Now that there is no international plane service to Thailand using the boat is ideal for those who do not wish to visit Laos. The boat ticket will cost you Y800. These can be purchased through any of the cafes or contact DuliGuides.
Cargo Boat.
Cargo boats rarely leave from Jinghong, instead you have to travel to Guanlei Port 4-5hrs south. It used to be possible to visit this port and embark on any cargo boat leaving for Chiang Saen. Due to new regulations they are no longer allow to take passengers, except for two.
Because they are predominately cargo boats so they don't have a set schedule for passengers. They leave when the boat is full of cargo. This means arranging passage on one of these boats can be difficult and sometimes requires an overnight stay in Guanlei to catch the boat in the morning. Large groups (6 plus) may get special privileges i.e. the boat will wait.
It's an excellent experience and a great way to see life on the Lancang (Mekong) River. The journey takes around 14hrs sailing time, when the light fades they moor up on the river bank and relax for the evening. Accommodation is basic but comfortable. You will normally eat when the crew eats. If you want extra food you'll need to take your own. Cost is Y500. DuliGuides or the cafes can try to help arranging this trip.
